The
Veranda room was added to the house in 1999 and provided the owners
an opportunity to raise the level of FIVE STAR finish to a new
and higher standard and to take advantage of the spectacular River,
Harbour, and Bay of Fundy views. The room was added to the side
of the house above a new large covered veranda and provided the
opportunity to correct some architectural errors of past renovations.
The exterior was closely tied into the house with the addition
of period style brackets, trim pieces, post, stair and railing
details.
The
interior was finished with period trim work, doors, and lights
salvaged by Ralph from local demolition sites. The random width
painted pine floor recalls an older style found in the mid 1800's
when the house was built and nicely shows off the hand made Persian
rugs.
Set
in a very bold color scheme the furnishings revolve around an
impressive Walnut bed with heavily carved head and footboard dating
from mid 1800's. Ralph and Karen found it in an estate sale near
Moncton and think the styling is English. It is complemented by
a cupboard/dresser locally made by the master craftsmen of Lordly
and Howe. This piece dates accurately to 1869-77 by way of the
makers stamp showing their address. We know they where at this
Germain Street location from 1869 until the Great Saint John fire
burned them out on June 20, 1877. It obviously survived the Great
Fire and was found in an estate in Fredericton. The walls are
decorated with a number of steel engravings taken from 1860's
an 70's newspapers and show the laying of the first trans-Atlantic
Cable and several sailing boats of the day. The Veranda room is
finished with a comfortable sitting area ideal for taking in the
views or catching up on the days events on TV. As with each room
at the Homeport there is a four piece bath, individual climate control and a well lit work desk with private phone, Fax/Modem plug. A VCR and selection
of movies are available in house.
